ReconTEXTILEize: Byzantine Textiles from Late Antiquity to the Present

Student-Created Weaving Samples

In fall 2018, as a final assignment for the course “Analysis of Art: Early Byzantine Textiles” (taught by Marianne Weldon, Collections Manager, Bryn Mawr College), students practiced Late Antique weaving techniques by creating small samples on looms. Primarily employing the tapestry weaving technique (in which the warp threads are hidden by the weft), the designs of these samples range from original creations to replicas of motifs found in the Jefferson University collection of textiles. Please touch and explore the different weave structures and materials incorporated in these samples.
